Gateway Sign Proposed Changes
12/29/2008

As you may recall from our previous newsletter, there are entities that do not care for our sign and would like to see changes made to it. At the Encino Neighborhood Council general meeting held on December 3, 2008, several motions were approved to suggest that the BID make specific changes to the gateway sign. The Neighborhood Council has requested that the Bureau of Engineering not issue our revocable permit until this matter is resolved.

If the BID is willing to make the suggested changes, the Neighborhood Council would support the issuing of the R permit. The first change the Neighborhood Council recommended is having “The Valley’s Miracle Mile” removed from the sign and in its place state the year that Encino, not the BID, was established. They would also like the gold lettering in Encino Commons changed to green.

After discussions with the sign fabricator, it has been determined that the cabinet where Encino Commons is written is welded to the arch and cannot be removed therefore the color can’t be changed. In order to accommodate the Neighborhood Council’s request, the two semi-circles that have “The Valley’s Miracle Mile” would need to be removed, brought to San Diego for changes and then reinstalled. This would involve 2 overnight full street closures.

We anticipate the initial cost of these changes, not including permit fees, to be $30,000. The Council Office is investigating if they have funds available in their street furniture account to pay for the suggested changes.

The BID would like your opinion. Due to the substantial cost of this sign and tremendous amount of time and effort put into its design, fabrication and installation, the BID Board feels that each stakeholder should have a voice in this decision.

Do you approve of the changes as proposed by the Encino Neighborhood Council?
